Madeley Active Retirement Group

Now a pensioner, I have joined the active retirement group which meets in Madeley on Thursday mornings at Jubilee House from 10am – 12pm. The aim of the group is to encourage us to try out new pursuits, discover hidden talents or revive talents from the past. Through past weeks we have tried our hands at computing, painting, creative writing, play reading and learning German to name but a few.

We’ve visited the library, the locality, the postal sorting office and we’ve remembered days gone by. Much useful information has come our way from visiting speakers and from each other. We’ve walked, talked and laughed together as each week brings something different; so new friendships are made and body, mind and spirits are kept alert and active.

I would recommend this group to anyone who is looking for something to do and friendly folk to do it with. This is one of several courses run by the WEA in this area, for further information please telephone Sue on Telford 583886.

Home Maintenance Advice Service

The service is currently working with the local community to set up a community tool loan scheme. The scheme would appreciate any donations of hand tools, old or new.

Hammers, screw drivers, wood chisels, planes, vices, in fact any tools that might be lying in the shed or garage gathering rust or dust, would be gratefully received

We need your tools – so please have a look.
We can arrange collection. Please call on 07813 102549

Healthy Madeley Week

We would like to apologise to the ‘Healthy Madeley’ partnership. Unfortunately, we were unable to print their article on activities planned for September. However, we are pleased to include this follow-up report...

At the beginning of September, Madeley residents were offered the opportunity to try a range of health and fitness sessions within CHEC and the Health Shop, based on Madeley High Street. These ranged from Help to Quit advice, making non-alcoholic cocktails, testing body fat!, aromatherapy and beauty tips to energy efficiency advice and making reflective radiator panels. Over 200 people sampled these sessions and several more enrolled on a variety of courses now running at CHEC.

Many people had not used CHEC before and were pleasantly surprised at the wealth of information and advice available there. The event was a joint project organised by both CHEC and Telford & Wrekin Council. It enabled local people to look at health in its widest sense and to look at ways in which they can improve their own health, fitness and well being.

Healthy Madeley will hopefully become an annual event, but in the meantime the Health Shop at CHEC is open every day between 9am and 3pm offering a wide range of help, advice, information and sign-posting to other agencies or self help groups.

Why not pop in sometime to see what we offer or you can telephone on 582659. Ask for Brenda, Sue or Helen.

Monitor Appeal . . . Thank You

To the generous people who very kindly donated baby monitors in response to our appeal in the last issue, which was also followed up by the Shropshire Star.

These have been passed on to the Hospice Outreach Sister who will loan them out to families in need. The help afforded to carers in the home by these little gizmos is immense.

Anyone who missed our appeal and would like to donate a working, but redundant, baby monitor can do so by contacting Julie at Jubilee House on 278001.
