Featured Councillor

Cllr Joanna Sheldon for Cuckoo Oak Ward

I have been married for two years and moved to Sutton Hill four years ago. I joined Madeley Parish Council two years ago after being nominated by the local Labour party, of which I am an active member, and was subsequently co-opted by Madeley Parish Council.

As a parish councillor I have enjoyed being involved in local community issues. I’ve got to know many of the local people of Cuckoo Oak and Madeley through my voluntary work. This comes from involvement with DIAL Shropshire, Age Concern and I am currently volunteering for the local Cat Protection League, along with my parish council duties.

The one thing that has stood out for me is the strong community spirit and pride which exists within all areas of the Parish. In this day and age it is a rarity!

I would like to see more local people attending our meetings so they can be part of the process of bringing about positive changes for our parish as a whole.

I am proud to be part of our local community and to serve Madeley Parish Council and look forward to being of further help and assistance to Cuckoo Oak parishioners.

“The Bridges of Madeley County”
By the Parish Poet

An alternative explanation for the state of the High Street ….

We recently visited the set of a new film starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. In this adaptation, Clint Eastwood plays a photographer researching historic bridges for a national magazine.

Using a VERY OLD MAP, taken originally by the Pilgrim Fathers to America, he locates Madeley, but finding no mention of an iron bridge on the OLD map he gets lost and finds himself photographing the unique architecture of the bridge at the bottom of Madeley High Street.

A local housewife, played by Meryl Streep, helps him out of a deep pot-hole into which he has unfortunately fallen, whilst concentrating on his photography.

Their eyes met and over the next few days there followed a brief but passionate encounter which neither forgot for the rest of their days.

Years later, her children were puzzled by a strange request contained in her will: to scatter her ashes from the Madeley Bridge. It was her way of being re-united with the photographs.

And so, dear reader, if you should pass the bottom of Madeley High Street and see a man in a pot-hole, or something drifting in the breeze from the parapet of the bridge, just go quietly about your business because filming is in progress for the ‘Bridges of Madeley County’. Lack of maintenance has absolutely nothing to do with it!

. . . Our correspondent is currently working on an alternative explanation for the corrugated shed at the rear of Madeley Shopping Malls, a fine example of niche architecture!

Your Letters

Dear Madeley Matters

Recently I was shown around the Madeley Centre by one of the NEAT members. I was shocked to see the level of neglect the centre suffers with. As a regular user of the Madeley Centre I had my eyes well and truly opened!

Madeley has a very strong sense of community and pride, something I have encountered as a relative newcomer to Shropshire in the past three years. Unfortunately, these days community strength and pride is somewhat a rarity.

Recently I have become aware of a scheme to make positive changes to the Madeley Centre which is being organised by members of NEAT and Madeley Parish Council. I would like to wish them every success in doing so and hope I can be of help and support in the future.

Mrs J Sheldon – Sutton Hill
