Spring Clean 2002

Last year was a record: we had about 900 people from the Madeley Parish involved in cleaning our green spaces, which is more people taking part than in the rest of Telford put together!

This year there will be more theatre and more prizes, so make sure your group/school gets involved. Ring 278001 for more details.

Coming soon – new Community Recycling Centre for South Telford

In 2000/01 T&WC undertook a review of waste recycling services. This identified the need to improve facilities for recycling and composting at Community Recycling Centres. The sites have traditionally been seen as an extension of the tip and their layout and design did not lend itself to promoting recycling.
During 2001 the Centres in North Telford have undergone refurbishment.

In South Telford however the review indicated that neither Hills Lane or Stoneyhill sites had the capacity or were in appropriate locations for further development. It was therefore agreed by the Council that both sites should be replaced by a new custom-designed Recycling Centre. The centre will include provision to recycle a full range of materials including glass, cans, paper, wood, cardboard, batteries, soil, rubble and garden waste. It is hoped in due course to introduce plastics. It is also hoped that an area of the Centre will be dedicated to segregation of materials for reuse.

The new Centre will be larger than the former Southern Sites and will have capacity to take all previous users and more! The design will include a ramp to access skips for heavy materials. The Centre will be focused on recycling and users will be encouraged to bring their waste segregated ready for recycling or composting.

Unfortunately, due to investment needs for the new site it has been necessary to close the Stoneyhill Centre before the new centre is ready. Former users are being encouraged to use Centres at Ketley and Granville to avoid putting too much pressure on Hills Lane. The Hills Lane Site will remain open until the new Centre is operational.

Introduction of Free Entry permit Scheme at Community Recycling Centres

The Community Recycling Centres are for disposal of HOUSEHOLD WASTE ONLY. It is illegal to use the sites for disposal of trade waste. It has become evident that a significant amount of trade waste is being disposed of at the sites. This is contributing to congestion and queuing at the sites and the disposal costs for trade waste are also being subsidised by the tax payer.

To tackle the problem, from 8th April, anyone bringing household waste to any CRC using a van, pick-up, trailer (attached to any type of vehicle) or commercial type vehicle will need to apply for a free entry permit from Telford & Wrekin Council.

The Permit Scheme will apply to all the following Centres:

  • Newport - Springfield Industrial Estate,
  • Granville - Off A5, Red Hill
  • Ketley - New Whitchurch Drive (A5223)
  • Madeley - Hills Lane (and the new Southern Centre when this becomes operational)

Permits are FREE to householders and an application form is available either at the CRC or by phoning Telford & Wrekin Waste Management Unit on 01952 202187.

An entry permit does not entitle the holder to deposit trade waste at a CRC.

Small traders can find out more information about local reprocessors and/or how to negotiate a trade waste disposal contract by contacting the Waste Management Unit on 01952 202214 or 202361.
