Roof Restoration at St Michael’s Church Madeley – January 2002

The purpose of the project is to restore any damaged roof timbers and replace all the slate tiles and the work will take some three months. Fortunately access to the roof is from above and so there will be no disruption to the normal Sunday services or to funerals or weddings.

The total cost of the project is £145,272. English Heritage are giving tremendous support with a grant of £84,456. St Michael’s has to find a further £45,685 in the next few months and so a number of initiatives are being set up.

There are two forthcoming fund raising events:

April - Cake Stall, Bring and Buy, Table Top Sale in Madeley Centre

May - Concert by Temponilla and other musicians: 7.30pm May 4th

Also being organised are a local coffee morning, a sponsored parachute jump, a concert by Abraham Darby Show Band and later in the year a display of Christmas trees – and a Pantomime in 2003. It will also be possible to contribute towards the purchase of individual Welsh slate tiles for the new roof.

The Vicar, Reverend Henry Morris said “St Michael’s is such an important Church, both historically with its links with Thomas Telford and John Fletcher, and today as the parish Church of Madeley”.

Invitations have gone out to any who are interested to actually see into the interior of the extraordinary roof structure – designed by the talented Thomas Telford – which looks more like a bridge than a roof in its interior construction. Visitors are welcome on a number of Saturdays when the Church is specially open. Details from the Church Office, 10 Church St, Madeley, Tel: 01952 585718.

Pupil Power!

Anyone in and around Madeley Centre on a Thursday morning will have seen students from Madeley Court School hard at work trying to clean up the local area.

A group of year 10 Outdoor Environment students are trying to make the centre a bit more attractive by cleaning off graffiti, picking up litter and tidying up flower beds. Members of the NEAT group and Telford & Wrekin landscaping department have offered advice to the pupils and tools have been provided by the Parish Council. Councillor Uppal, at the Kookery Nook café in Madeley Mall, kindly gives the weary workers tea and toast! Also VERY gratefully received.

We are in need of compost, shrubs and plants, so please contact Jubilee House or Madeley Court School if you can help us out.

Top Awards for Madeley Court Students

An awards ceremony was held at the Priorslee campus of Wolverhampton University on 30 January 2002, for students of Telford & Wrekin schools who had been outstanding in their work experience placements.

Two year 11 students from each school could be put forward for the prestigious Telford Business Education Partnership Work Experience Award. Two Madeley Court School students, Sarah Edge and Rachelle Hickman walked away with top prizes. Sarah won £20 for her nomination in the Key Stage 4 category and Rachelle won £250 and came 1st in the Special Achievement category.
