View from Sutton Hill

If you are elderly, infirm or disabled and live in the centre of Sutton Hill it would be easy to believe that officialdom really doesn’t care about you because in November 2002 the bus service was scrapped. The rerouting of both the 11 and 22 to the perimeter road now means that many bus users cannot access a regular bus from Sutton Hill. The distance to the nearest stop is almost a quarter of a mile, not a problem if you are physically able but an impossible distance for some people.

The alternatives are totally inadequate: a ‘Community Bus’ which operates on Tuesdays and Fridays between 10.30am and 1.30pm and Dial a Ride, which requires users to give up their bus pass and predict if they will be well enough to travel on a given day.

For the elderly who have become virtual prisoners in their own home the campaign to reinstate one of the buses to the Centre continues.

When Telford and Wrekin Council gave themselves permission to fill in the Shawfield Close, Summerhill and Legges Way underpasses they failed to consult the users of these underpasses.

bus stop
Like Legges Way, Shawfield Close was a much-used underpass and its passing has upset many people. Those living in the north of the estate i.e. Stebbings, Hilda Hook Close etc. could access their post office, community centre, friends and family without having to cross a busy road. People living in the south of the estate could likewise travel anywhere in Sutton Hill or Hills Lane and go to the medical practice without having to cross a busy road.

I can only remember Shawfield Close underpass being painted once in the last 15 years so maintenance costs were negligible. Graffiti was a minor problem and never obscene. Yes, drainage could have been better and water did collect after a heavy downpour but the underpass was useable.

We have been promised an alteration to the road to make crossing safer but don’t you think that should have been done BEFORE the underpass was filled?
