RUSSELL GREEN

Better and better and …

Following local consultation, Madeley Parish Council has submitted its case for registration of Russell Green as a ‘Town Green’. This should provide better protection for the land as a recreational amenity for local people. The bequest of Russell Green for public benefit and its subsequent public ownership, management and use creates special circumstances for the consideration of this application.

The Borough of Telford & Wrekin, in partnership with Madeley Parish Council, has planted six trees in Russell Green to create a better appearance. The trees are a spring-flowering cherry, Prunus Shirotae ‘Mount Fuji’. It is intended to underplant in Autumn with dwarf daffodil bulbs.

Our attention now turns to the planting in Russell Square and Anstice Square...

Redundancy Leads to Business Opportunity

After the closure of local employer Telford Foods in 2003, many of its employees took the opportunity to examine their future. One such person was Chris Brookes (the Team Leader for the night shift) who was determined to turn her misfortune into an opportunity.

She had always thought that she could run her own small business and eventually came up with the idea of providing more choice for local parents when selecting nappies for their babies.

In setting up Shropshire Nappies she was conscious of the fact that many new parents prefer to use natural products, but might be put off by the initial outlay and the thought of having to constantly wash and dry nappies themselves. By taking over that role herself, she thought that she could offer more choice to parents and at the same time do her bit to reduce the amount of rubbish going into landfill sites.

Chris provides parents with clean natural cotton nappies once a week that have been laundered to NHS standards and at the same time taking away the dirty ones that have been stored in a bin that she leaves on her first visit.

Chris says, “Everyone wins by using natural cotton nappies… the baby, parents and the environment”.

Since launching Shropshire Nappies in November last year, partnerships have been developed with the Telford & Wrekin and Bridgnorth Councils, who provide subsidised opportunities for parents to use Chris’s service.

Telford & Wrekin Senior Citizens’ Forum – An active voice for older people

Telford & Wrekin Senior Citizens’ Forum is a group of older people who meet together on a regular basis to discuss issues that are of current concern to older people in the Borough, and then decide on appropriate follow-up action. The first full meeting is very important as it is where a constitution will be passed and a Management Committee elected. All you need to do to join the Forum is to phone Jill Henderson (the Age Concern Development Worker attached to the Forum) on 01952 293500 and she can send you a registration form.

Anyone is welcome to attend the meeting on Monday 20th September 2004, 10.30am – 1pm (buffet lunch provided), but only people registered with the Forum by 6th September will be entitled to vote. For more information please phone Jill on 293500.
