Making a difference...
If, over the next year or two, you notice that Madeleys natural environment seems more colourful than before, you may have local school children to thank. As part of this years Spring Clean, different schools and groups worked with Madeley Parish Council to plant wild flowers close to paths and public rights of way around the parish. In total around 3,000 plants were put in.

The use of native flowers enables us to brighten up the landscape, without being obtrusive, said Nicola Randall, the Madeley Green Spaces Officer, who was also involved in the project. Unlike cultivated varieties, wildflowers are also more likely to support insects and other wildlife.
Care was also taken to only choose species that would occur naturally in the type of habitat they were planted into. For example only woodland edge species were planted alongside hedgerows, or paths around wooded areas. This adds to the feeling of naturalness, and at the same time increases the plants chances of survival.
