Madeley Parish Council Spring Clean 2004

Heritage Open Days 2004 – Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th September

Do you realise just what a varied past Madeley had – and how many interesting Madeley buildings survived even the horrors of the 1960s?

This year, for the first time, we will be joining in the annual Civic Trust celebration of local heritage. There will be guided walks, a Saturday evening talk (with refreshments) at Jubilee House and the chance to satisfy your curiosity about some of Madeley’s most historic buildings.

Times vary – watch out for posters around Madeley nearer the event.

Starting out on Sutton Hill – Tales of People on the Move

Sutton Hill was the first housing estate to be built in Telford New Town and a short book, telling the story behind the estate and the lives of the residents during the early years there, has just been produced by the Madeley Living History Project. The information in the book has been contributed by present and former residents of Sutton Hill as well as by former staff of Telford Development Corporation. The project has been brought to fruition by the Sutton Hill Book Group whose members provided information of their own and have interviewed their friends and neighbours both past and present.

The book was launched at Madeley Parish Open Evening on Monday 17th May when over 55 people came together and enjoyed several rousing choruses of the Sutton Hill Song, presentations to the Book Group members and a taste of Pat Partridge’s delicious nibbles.

The 36 page A5 book is illustrated with photographs and specially commissioned cartoons. It costs £2.00 per copy and is available from Madeley Library, Jubilee House and the Sutton Hill Community Centre.
