The Friendly Retirement Group

The Friendly Retirement Group meets every Thursday at 10am in Jubilee House, Madeley. Originally members were part of the WEA Active Retirement Group, but when the group had to be closed, members decided to set up on their own. With the support of Madeley Parish Council and Telford & Wrekin Council for Voluntary Services, the Friendly Retirement Group was born.

Because the group is independent, everyone has a say in what the programme will be and discuss the next series of sessions so that everyone has their say. Each week something different happens. One week a member gives a talk, sharing their life experiences and jolly interesting talks they are! For example a former RAF man, a Royal Navy man, a Merchant Navy man, a lady who spent her childhood in India when her father was in the army, and many more to look forward to. Every month an outside local visit is arranged, such as visiting the Jackfield Tile Museum, a guided stroll around Madeley or a visit to Wolverhampton. An interesting range of outside speakers have visited the group – soon to give a talk will be a former policeman and another is an expert on Iceland. At other times, the members play scrabble, card games and have discussions.

So what is it all about? It is about having fun, doing something different. The Friendly Retirement Group positively welcomes newcomers and wants to share its friendship with other retired people who need company and interest. So come along and try it. There is disabled access and we help one another with transport.

You can phone Colin on 01952 580689 and he will tell you what is happening each Thursday or Joan will send you a programme. Don’t be shy, it’s difficult trying something new when we are older, but you won’t regret it!
