Thomas Telford “The Colossus of Roads” 1757 – 1834

Despite being born in Dumfriesshire, Thomas Telford is forever associated with Shropshire because of the years he spent as County Surveyor when he left his mark on engineering projects throughout the county. It was because of this that Shropshire’s new town was named in his honour in 1968.

Curiously, few monuments directly associated with him can be found in Telford itself but one of the finest is the church of St. Michael in Madeley which was designed by Telford and dedicated in 1796 to replace an earlier building which had become unsafe.

In this, the 250th anniversary year of his birth, celebratory events are taking place throughout the town and county. Here in Madeley we are holding a special day school on Saturday 8th September, at Jubilee House, when various speakers will cast light on different aspects of Telford’s life and achievements and there will be a special guided tour of St. Michael’s. Tickets cost £5.00 which includes lunch and refreshments.

Who are these new immigrants and why are they here?
