I moved to Woodside in 1981, it was supposed to be temporary – 27 years later I’m still here. I was made welcome by everyone, joining in with all the community activities. I became involved with council work in the late 1980s with CHC Housing Trust.

I am disabled and require a wheelchair to provide me with my mobility.I know what it’s like to live on a pittance and have all the outgoings that come from owning your own home. I know there are few people who can understand or give useful advice but I would like to put myself forward to help any residents who are suffering in similar circumstances.

I’m particularly concerned at present, with ‘cowboy’ builders who prey on the vulnerable. I’ve been there and will be pleased to give advice and support to all affected by these conmen. I’m also trying to set up a ‘friendly neighbour shopping scheme’ with Tescos and other supermarkets.

I believe we have no equality of rights in society, it's time for a change! It's time we were heard!

I can be contacted on 01952 275424.

Councillor Betty Evans, Cllr for Woodside

Your Letters 1

On Wednesday March 5th there was a letter in the Shropshire Star expressing the writer’s opinions of amalgamated schools; in the letter he stated that for the last 18 months the Sir Alexander Fleming School had been in special measures. This is not the case, since the amalgamation of the schools there have been two Ofsted inspections, one in 2002 and the most recent 13 months ago in February 2007. Since the amalgamation the school has not been and is not in special measures. Anyone who would like to read the full Ofsted reports can do so by logging onto http://www.ofsted.gov.uk.

Your Letters 2

Dear Sir,

I am writing to complain about the sudden amount of dogs fouling the pathway and grass area in Mayfield.

Over the last few months it has got worse. We don’t see any dogs on their own, they are always with their owners – are these people so short sighted or what, as they don’t seem to see what their pets are doing!

We do have children that play on these areas; also if it’s dark you don’t always see the mess on the pathway until it’s too late.

Dog owners beware! You are being watched and will be reported if you don’t clear the mess up.

Resident of Mayfield

(Ed. Note: dog poo bags can be collected free of charge from Jubilee House, Park Lane Centre and Sutton Hill Centre)
