News from Madeley Community Orchard
This thriving project has recently been given a massive boost to its future with two successful awards £76,000 from the Big Lottery (where only 1 in 5 bids succeeds) and £38,000 from Veolia Environmental Trust.
This has enabled the Orchard Steering Group to appoint a part-time project manager, Glenys Evans. Part of her role is to involve local people in this exciting new phase of development as well as improving the infrastructure and facilities at the orchard.
Recently, seed sowing workshops were held at the Park Lane and Sutton Hill Centres, showing children and young mums how to grow items such as salads, herbs, beans and pumpkins. Also with 'Jamie Oliver' still in people’s consciousness, Glenys and her colleague undertook a fascinating tasting session with kids tucking into edible leaves with their usual snacks and drinks.
Very soon we will be installing our own ‘composting toilet’ and running water. Later we intend to develop a wildlife area and pond, all of this linked by new and improved pathways.

Our thriving local schools
ECO CLUB
Sir Alexander Fleming Primary School has a very active ECO club that meets twice a week, after school on a Tuesday and at lunch time on a Thursday. As well as all the recycling activities and working on reducing our carbon footprint we are enthusiastic gardeners. Currently we are cultivating raised beds as mini vegetable gardens and hope to have a picnic with our produce at the end of term.
Our garden is used by the whole school for a variety of activities as well as our Science studies. As well as the new raised beds and mini beast habitats, we have just had installed our log circle for outdoor learning. All of these improvements have been supported by Anthony Brasenell from Telford and Wrekin and Nobridge Nursery.

Fantastical new mural
The children in Sir Alexander Fleming Primary School are delighted to be able to show off their new wall murals throughout the school. The children helped to design all of the murals in the newly refurbished library by combining their favourite book characters with scenes of local historical interest. The school corridors and Nursery walls were also themed around favourite authors, book characters and scenes from traditional fairy tales.
All of the murals have helped to enhance the learning environment, and children are proud to discuss them and show them off to parents and visitors.
This project is the first of its kind in Telford and Mr Rob Tedaldi was the artist who worked his ‘creative magic’ across the school. He met with the children and was able to demonstrate his skill and creativity during his painting visits.
