Page 11 - Sutton Hill - a case for regeneration

Action taken from the first meeting: the following derelict properties have been cleared, tidied or made secure : 56, 59, 60, 61 & 108 Summerhill; 80, 91 & 160 Southgate; 20 Selbourne.

The Chairman’s view of the Sutton Hill Public Meeting:

After the initial meeting Cllr. Eric Carter issued a statement about what he felt was the way forward:

‘On 4th March Telford & Wrekin Council and more than 100 residents from Sutton Hill have come together with other partners to set up a positive approach to tackling some issues on the estate. These include reducing the number of vacant private properties, helping to clean up areas where rubbish is dumped on land, tackling issues such as anti-social behaviour and helping to restore a real sense of pride in Sutton Hill.

The Council will invest in Sutton Hill through its Borough Towns Initiative, although the Council will look to see if it can find other partners to help boost their regeneration fund for Sutton Hill.

Following the meeting, residents have joined a working group to look at ways of tackling the variety of issues that have been raised and how they can shape future plans for Sutton Hill.

We have a strong starting point and the issues raised by this and future meetings will help inform how we move forward with the regeneration of the area.’

Eric Carter, Cabinet Member for Regeneration

Sutton Hill Public Meeting – a Resident’s view on behalf of Stebbings Residents Group:

Residents seem to be ‘gobsmacked’ by the extent of the social problems being raised at this first meeting and how bad things had got for so many residents, especially the number of derelict properties that have been left to rot for years and the amount of anti-social activity that exists.

There is obviously a serious issue regarding ‘rogue landlords’ that urgently needs addressing. We hope that the new councillors who addressed the meeting will take note of this and act – we certainly will be holding them to account. We in the Stebbings Association have been asking for 6 years for improved parking facilities for local residents and something to be done about a derelict ‘litter strewn’ house – we don’t want to wait another 6 years for these issues to be addressed.

Vera George – Chair, Stebbings Residents Association

“The meetings have been positive and productive and have given urgency to the work that has been ongoing for some time concerning abandoned & burnt out properties.”

“I hope the responses to the consultation process – the questionnaire going out to residents – will be both positive and forward looking” – Councillor Alan Mackenzie (Cuckoo Oak Ward)
