Linda DalzielThe student experience:

I have recently completed a First Steps course “Introduction to Counselling Skills – provided by TCAT and held at CHEC in Madeley. I thought it could be a useful way of improving my skills and hoped it would form a valuable part of my personal development programme – for me, it did both!

I was given the opportunity to attend during my work-time and have thoroughly enjoyed the course. The Tutor was enthusiastic and very experienced and I feel I have gained a good, albeit basic, insight into the subject, but more importantly for me, I learned that there are some areas I personally really need to work on. We have learned a basic understanding of the main attributes a counsellor should possess.

I have begun putting some of the thoughts and ideas into practice already, in both my work and personal life. I found it particularly interesting that I have, through this course, learned some important things about myself.

The group was small and very quickly we all became friends and were able to share experiences with each other in a safe, confidential environment.

I have already put my name down to progress onto Level 2 Counselling in February at the campus at TCAT – the September course is already full (!) and know that several others in the group are intending to progress further too.
