All change at St Michael's

At some time or another many people in Madeley will have had a reason to visit St. Michael’s Church. Perhaps for a wedding, funeral or christening; maybe a pantomime, concert or carol service.

As a public meeting place St. Michael’s has many good features. It also has many that are not so good – poor lighting and electrics (fuses blow when a kettle is switched on!); an antiquated heating system; poor access within the church for those who are disabled; and only ONE toilet to cater for up to 300 people at major events!

All of this is about to change. From 22nd September 2008 St. Michael’s will be closed for approximately 3 months to allow a major re-ordering project to be carried out.

No significant structural changes will be undertaken – the famous Thomas Telford design will, instead, be enhanced by changes to the interior of the church to ensure that more pleasant and comfortable surroundings and facilities await visitors.

What changes will there be?

  • Level access throughout the main body of the church (the present hazards will be gone)
  • Underfloor heating with wall radiators (more cost effective and efficient)
  • A modern lighting and sound system (leave the torch and ear-trumpet at home)
  • An enclosed modern kitchen (away with the tea-urn on the trestle table)
  • 2 modern toilets with disabled facilities
  • Improved accessibility for disabled visitors
  • Moving the Parish office within the church to create more open space at the entrance.

Detailed plans of all the proposed work are available for inspection now in the church.

The Parish office (currently in the church and open from 9.00 – 12.00 Monday to Wednesday) will be re-located whilst the work is being carried out. Details of this and all the arrangements for continuing regular worship while the church is closed will be shown on the notice board at bottom of the drive – below the Vicarage.

Finally, if you feel that you would like to help toward the cost of the work please contact me via the Church Office – telephone 585718. Your contribution would be greatly appreciated.

David Bulley: 413663 Treasurer, St. Michael’s Church.
