What’s Happening on Sutton Hill?

Following the public meetings and consultation, a number of residents expressed an interest in being further involved in matters affecting the community. A community safety course called ‘First Steps’ has been devised and a total of 18 residents have attended weekly over a 5 week period. They have learnt about crime and crime statistics, safer places and safe design, changing patterns of policing and many other topics concerning safe communities. The teaching staff came from the police, Fire and Rescue, Telford & Wrekin and TCAT.

The course was enjoyed by everybody who, at the end of it, felt they understood more about their area and the organisations who work in it. More importantly they feel better equipped to do something about the problems they encounter. They are now working with Telford & Wrekin Council to look at how best to respond to the survey which was carried out in March/April 2008.

Youth on Sutton Hill

Sutton Hill consultationGround Works / Madeley Parish Council Partnership

A new website has been set up: www.youthonsuttonhill.ning.com.

Young people can log in, add their ideas and see what other young people say. At the moment we have information from adults on how they feel about living in Sutton Hill and what improvements they would like to see, but we don’t know what the young people think. Your views are important so please let us know via the website!

This website has been set up by an organisation called ‘Groundwork’. They have been employed by Madeley Parish Council to find out what young people want and to see if we can arrange some additional activities in the area, but to do this we need information. In addition to the running the website, Groundwork workers and volunteers were at Sutton Hill Fun Day, helping Telford and Wrekin with their consultation and also making a video with young people about the area.

Stephen Cook from Groundwork said, ‘everyone is so friendly it’s incredible. As a team we are really excited about finding out what young people on the estate think as well as working with people to deliver some activities that benefit the estate as a whole.’

Your main concerns were:

  • The youth club on Sutton Hill is great but they wish it was open over the weekend too.
  • There are good facilities like the muga, skate park etc but the younger kids are annoyed that the older kids always kick them off.
  • The young people also said how they would love a gym or organised health activities actually in Sutton Hill preferably free of charge.

GroundworksA football team for their age group that trained and played in Sutton Hill was another big desire of the young people.

You will see us about over the summer and if you want to get in contact with us you can email me at stephen.cook@groundwork.org.uk

At the Fun Day many young people asked about lighting for the multi-use games area (MUGA). This was looked into some time ago and we have tried every avenue but unfortunately, the bottom line is that for various technical reasons, it can’t be done. But these are all good ideas – keep them coming. If we know what is wanted we can check it out.
